"Leonid Purygin was born to the family of a teacher and the toy factory director in the small town of Narofominsk near Moscow in 1951, on the eve of the epoch of the “thaw”, Khrushchev’s spring. The mythology of toys surrounding him from his childhood, the poetry of Buratino’s (Russian Pinnochio) “wooden theatre” had the same impact on his consciousness as the stay of young Vasily Kandinsky in an izba (peasant’s house) filled with icons.
The magical item – a toy – a paradoxical object on the verge of a magical dream and direct reality – turned L. Purygin into an artist. The world of the object, which lives in the mystical layers of reality that man associates with a virtual object and with which he starts to play, naturally transformed into the layers of his painting, the folding icons, and sculptures in L. Purygin’s creative work.
Each part of the master’s composition is perceived as a living part of the Universe, containing all its properties and qualities, without fail permeated by the Tree of Life or a cross bearing the artist’s figure – brilliant Lenya Purygin from Nara, connecting heaven and earth with his body."
